We caught up with Huddersfield's Debbie Gilespie Cake Design for her top tips on choosing a novelty wedding cake...
Would you like to inject some personality into your wedding but think you need to have a traditional 3-tiered white wedding cake? Well think again! Your wedding cake is probably the one area where you can go a bit more bold (and your guests will love you for it). But how do you choose a novelty wedding cake?
Choose a reveal wedding cake
If you are a little nervous about having a full novelty wedding cake, choose a reveal cake (or as I like to affectionately call them "traditional at the front, party at the back"). The front of the cake can be styled to match the overall look of the wedding but spin the cake around and it opens up to reveal your favourite superheroes, films or even your favourite books. It is also a great way for the couple to compromise on two different design ideas.
Tell a story
My most favourite wedding cakes are the ones that tell a story. This could be the proposal, where you had your first date or just your shared lives together. Silhouette cakes are great for this but I love to use handpainting of landscapes and particularly the couple to bring the story to life.
Include your pets
Very often, a couple will have fur babies who obviously cannot be at the wedding but whom form a special part of their lives. So why not immortalise your pets in sugar or better still in polymer clay as a cake topper to show everyone how much they mean to you.
Don't be afraid to go with a theme
Are you both mad Harry Potter or Game of Thrones fans? Do you love to play board games together? If it is a shared love and makes you both happy, then use it as the basis for your cake. Chances are your guests will know that about you too and will think it is a genius idea.
Choose a cake maker who "gets" you
Are you worried about being judged by your wedding supplier for your crazy ideas? Do your research in advance and don't be afraid to ask questions about their style and send them ideas. Be sure to meet them to build up a great working relationship as this is often where the best ideas arise. When you find the right supplier, they will be as excited about your ideas as you are so don't feel that you should have to compromise.
Choosing your wedding cake should be a fun, tasty and enjoyable experience with the result as unique as you both are. To find out more, head to www.debbiegillespiecakedesign.co.uk
