Christmas and New Year is the most popular time to get engaged* but research from wedding insurance specialist, CoverMyWedding.co.uk, reveals that couples might not be financially protecting all their purchases.

One in seven (16%)** couples buy wedding insurance within 100 days of their wedding, according to CoverMyWedding.co.uk, leaving them potentially missing out on protection if they have already started putting down deposits and making payments. Wedding insurance often only covers items booked and bought after it is purchased, so it is important to buy it as soon as possible and before any big bookings or purchases are made, as depending on your insurer, they may not be included.

The average length of time that people buy their wedding insurance in advance of their big day is 299 days and a quarter (26%) buy more than a year before, according to CoverMyWedding.co.uk data.

Anthony Corbett at CoverMyWedding.co.uk said: "Congratulations to all the happy couples who got engaged over the festive period. While wedding insurance is unlikely to be top of mind, or first on your list when planning for your big day, it's worth considering purchasing a policy as soon as you start to incur costs, such as placing a deposit with a venue or a caterer. This is because often there are limits on cover for losses of payments or deposits paid before purchasing an insurance policy. You can buy cover for up to two years before your big day, and the price doesn't change, so it's a really good idea to get it in place early."

Anthony concludes: "Wedding insurance offers financial protection against a range of mishaps should your special day go wrong. The cover includes cancellation and rearrangement which are the most common claims but also theft or loss of wedding gifts and rings, failure of suppliers such as florists and caterers, problems with bridal attire, transport, cake, photography and video, and also legal expenses and personal liability for the big day."

CoverMyWedding.co.uk cover weddings up to £50,000 in value, including UK and overseas ceremonies and receptions. Policies start from just £37.99***.
