New venue alert! The Grand Lodge at Oaklands

Interior of The Grand Lodge at Oaklands wedding venue in East Yorkshire

Tell us about The Grand Lodge at Oaklands...
Built in 2020, The Grand Lodge replaces the tipis that once sat at Oaklands. Constructed using local timber, this unique lodge venue is a mix of rustic charm with luxury elements. Nestled within 200 acres of beautiful woodland, beside a picturesque lake in the most tranquil setting.  Oaklands boasts both outdoor and indoor ceremony areas in the heart of rural East Yorkshire.

How did the venue launch?
Back in 2011 Mike and Linda, the owners, hired tipis and held their own wedding on the land, which we now know as Oaklands. Their guests were so impressed that they encouraged the newlyweds to turn Oaklands into a business. After building the outdoor ceremony area, sourcing their own tipis and preparing the space for regular weddings, the first wedding was conducted in 2015. In 2017 it was time to plan for the future, Mike and Linda decided to build The Grand Lodge, which would replace the tipis and offer year-round weddings.

What's your top tip for couples when choosing a wedding venue?
Before you embark on your search, have a list in mind of what is important to you. Do your research – most venes will have a website and social pages, does the venue tick some of your boxes? If so, book an appointment. On your visit, try to imagine yourself and your guests there – do you get a good vibe from the place? The majority of couples will know instantly if it's the one!

What's the most common question couples ask you and what's your answer?
Can I choose my own caterers and suppliers? Yes of course, we have a list of suggested suppliers. However, you are free to choose your own.

How can you help couples adapt their day during the pandemic?
Our aim is to be as flexible as possible; we listen to our couples individual needs and requests and endeavour to help and adapt their wedding, ensuring everything works for them, whether that be downscaling or postponing.

From best mates to distant relatives: Brits reveal the wedding gift hierarchy

How much should you spend on a wedding gift? It seems the answer depends on just how well you know the happy couple. New research from One4all Gift Cards has revealed that almost half of Brits (49%) would spend less on a wedding gift if they were not particularly close to the couple. The relationship came out ahead of travel and accommodation costs (38%) and paying for a hen or stag do (28%) when it comes to factors influencing how much guests are prepared to spend. For those closest to them, Brits consider an average of £77 per person to be an acceptable wedding gift. The most popular amount was between £50 and £100, selected by 43% of respondents, while 36% believe spending up to £50 is perfectly acceptable. Just 5% would spend more than £200.
