Kasey Clarke, Founder of Sweet Cakey Thing

Kasey Clarke, Founder of Sweet Cakey Thing, explains how certain ingredients used in baking can actually be better for your skin compared to some moisturisers, leaving your skin looking hydrated and glowing.

We all dreamt of smothering ourselves in cake as a child, yet even then, that sort of behaviour wouldn’t go down too well at the dinner table. However, founder of Sweet Cakey Thing, Kasey Clarke, is here to explain why covering ourselves in cake is absolutely a good thing, as long as the ingredients are too. Here, she shares seven baking ingredients, which will help keep skin nourished and hydrated, making your skincare routine a piece of cake, literally.

Individually, all of these baking ingredients have a plethora of benefits that will leave your skin feeling amazing.

Why not get creative by using these ingredients to make your own face mask or body scrub? Otherwise, keep an eye out for products out there which contain all natural ingredients - the best thing is, you can probably eat them too!

almonds in a pot with a jar of almond oil and a wooden scoop

Almond can reduce signs of ageing and nourish the skin

Rich in vitamin E, almonds not only help to reduce the effects of UV damage on the skin, but this powerful antioxidant may also reduce the signs of ageing too by blocking free radicals in the body which play a huge role in the ageing process.

Almond milk is also typically very gentle on the skin, making it ideal for those with sensitive skin.

maple syrup pouring from a wooden spoon into a glass

Maple syrup can help to lower skin inflammation

Similar to raw honey, maple syrup has antioxidant properties which can help to lower skin inflammation, reduce redness as well as helping with blemished and dry skin, which many people will tend to battle with at this time in the year.

It's important that you invest in a pure format of the maple syrup, as store-bought maple syrups are just sugar-heavy syrups with maple flavoring.

Brown eggs in a plate

Eggs provide hydration and elasticity to your skin

The lutein that can be found in an egg yolk not only provides hydration and elasticity for skin, the accompanying protein helps to repair skin tissue, leaving the skin feeling firmer.

The (good) fatty acids found in egg yolks will also add moisture to the skin, while the whites include albumin, a protein that tightens pores (so less dirt can get inside) and helps to remove excess oil found on the skin's surface.

Pouring extra virgin olive oil in a glass bowl

Olive oil has anti-aging properties and can relieve skin from sun damage

The high content of vitamins A, E as well as D and K make extra virgin olive oil a very good moisturiser, helping to nourish even the most sensitive of skins.

The antioxidants and fatty acids can help to repair skin cells damaged by sunburn, with some studies even suggesting that popping some of this on after sun exposure may prevent the free radical damage that can lead to skin cancer.

Cocoa butter or Cocoa bean solid oil with cacao powder in spoon and raw cocoa beans in wooden bowl on rustic backdrop, healthy natural oil

Cocoa butter will help improve the surface texture of your skin

Another ingredient which is high in good fatty acids, cocoa butter is often praised for its ability to nourish the skin while improving its elasticity. The fat found in cocoa butter forms a barrier over the skin to help protect it and allow it to keep in moisture. It's also promoted to help heal rashes from conditions like eczema and dermatitis.

As well as the goodness of using cocoa butter on your skin, eating it can also help keep your skin feeling amazing. Not only has it been shown to contribute to protection from UV rays, it can also help to improve blood circulation in the skin.

Honey can help to prevent flares in acne-prone skin

Honey is also a high-reputable ingredient when it comes to skincare, thanks to its antibacterial and antiseptic properties, it can help those who suffer from oily or acne-prone skin.

Honey is also a natural humectant, which helps to draw moisture from the skin without replacing it, which is why it helps those with oily skin.

Coconut milk can help to maintain elasticity, preventing future wrinkles

Coconut milk has high levels of Vitamin C, which again helps to maintain the flexibility and elasticity of the skin. Improving elasticity in the skin is super important as we age as our bodies produce less collagen, leading to dryer skin and the formation of wrinkles.

Coconut milk also contains copper, which plays a key role in the synthesis and stabilisation of skin proteins, ensuring your skin continues to grow healthy cells.
