September/October 2018

Anyone who knows me knows that I’m a devoted sun-worshipper. Any little patch of sunlight and I’ll be in it – so it may come as a surprise that I’m actually kinda looking forward to autumn, mainly because I have two weddings to go to! One is in a gorgeous rustic barn in Lancashire; the other is a small laid-back affair in my native Essex. The two settings couldn’t be more different, and it got me thinking about all the wonderful places in which couples can now tie the knot. To see our pick of the region’s venues turn to page 17.

For any of you lovely readers who are getting married next summer, you’ve probably started thinking about the one. No, not your partner – the dress! Our fabulous fashion editor has pulled together a whole host of swoon-worthy gowns on page 67, all taking inspiration from a bygone era.

I love how an invitation landing on your doormat can set the scene for a couple’s big day, flick to page 55 to see what fun and funky stationery companies we have locally. As always, we’ve got our Hot Topic Q&A feature over on page 92, where our experts answer your burning questions – if you need some w-day advice, don’t hesitate to drop us a line!

Holdsworth House Hotel and Restaurant

This secluded four-star Jacobean manor is hidden behind walled gardens and three acres of picturesque grounds, featuring a neatly cut lawn, parterre garden and majestic trees.

Dating back to 1633, history oozes from every inch of Holdsworth House. The hotel has two dominating gables on the south facing façade, stone mullioned windows and a heavy studded door leading to the front terrace.

Inside, the venue provides a traditional setting that’s full of character, from oak-panelled halls and beamed ceilings to open fireplaces, there’s plenty to intrigue visitors. Many areas of the hotel have been renovated to offer a welcoming balance of classic style with modern facilities.

Ceremonies can be held for up to 120 guests in any room of the house, from the grand Stuart Room and the ground-floor Abraham Brigg Room to the De Aldworth Room, where John Lennon and George Harrison stayed in 1964.

For those dreaming of the great outdoors, there’s the new Garden Gazebo. Vows are taken with the congregation seated on New England-style chairs on the front lawn. There’s also the pretty Colonnade Courtyard, which has raised flowerbeds, an outdoor fireplace and plenty of birdsong. Receptions are held in the Stuart Room, the main function room of the hotel, which has a dancefloor, large bar and lounge.
