September/October 2018

Anyone who knows me knows that I’m a devoted sun-worshipper. Any little patch of sunlight and I’ll be in it – so it may come as a surprise that I’m actually kinda looking forward to autumn, mainly because I have two weddings to go to! One is in a gorgeous rustic barn in Lancashire; the other is a small laid-back affair in my native Essex. The two settings couldn’t be more different, and it got me thinking about all the wonderful places in which couples can now tie the knot. To see our pick of the region’s venues turn to page 17.

For any of you lovely readers who are getting married next summer, you’ve probably started thinking about the one. No, not your partner – the dress! Our fabulous fashion editor has pulled together a whole host of swoon-worthy gowns on page 67, all taking inspiration from a bygone era.

I love how an invitation landing on your doormat can set the scene for a couple’s big day, flick to page 55 to see what fun and funky stationery companies we have locally. As always, we’ve got our Hot Topic Q&A feature over on page 92, where our experts answer your burning questions – if you need some w-day advice, don’t hesitate to drop us a line!

Vicki and Rollo created perfect laid-back affair at Sandburn Hall

Vicki Elliott and Rollo Lunn first met at university in 2004. “He was living in halls with my friend Jen and I couldn’t help but notice his bright orange cagoule,” the bride laughs. “The first thing he remembers about me is my cowboy boots, which were in fashion at the time!” The pair became close friends and soon moved into a student house together and became official. “I thought he was really good-looking and a true gent,” she says.

Ten years later, Rollo took his beloved to a quirky converted pig shed in Wales for the weekend. “He popped out to the car and brought back this huge parcel covered in a bin bag,” remembers Vicki. “He pulled it off to reveal a piece of artwork he’d created with the words ‘Marry me’ on it. He got down on one knee and popped the question. As soon as I said yes, he ran off down the hill to a little stream and pulled out a bottle of champagne he’d been chilling in there!” The happy couple returned home and soon set the date for 23rd July, 2017, at the beautiful Sandburn Hall. Here the bride tells us all about their chilled-out wedding…

The Swinton Estate

One of the largest privately owned estates in England, Swinton Estate encompasses 20,000 acres of outstanding North Yorkshire countryside. It comprises Swinton Park, a 32-room castle hotel, the newly launched Country Club & Spa as well as Swinton Bivouac, a tree lodge and glamping retreat. Swinton Park is an ancestral stately home.

This secluded, luxury hotel boasts lavish interiors, historic grandeur and quirky eccentricities. It has three options for those all-important ‘I dos’ for up to 100 friends and family. The Library features a grand chandelier, high ceiling and huge windows overlooking the deer park. The Panelled Room offers garden views in a light and airy space. The Private Sitting Room is ideal for those wishing for a more personal ceremony surrounded by classical styling. There’s a range of options inside the hotel for post-vow parties and couples are welcome to have a marquee erected outside. Swinton Bivouac sits on a hilltop with panoramic views and is adjacent to the Druid’s Temple, a historical and impressive folly constructed in the late 1800s. Although not licensed for legal ceremonies, it’s ideal for a celebrant-led blessing in the great outdoors and lends itself perfectly to rustic, boho-style nuptials. Alternatively, on one of Swinton’s five lakes sits a wooded islet with a private hexagonal stone summerhouse. Reached by a hand-operated cable ferry, it’s a wonderfully romantic setting with pastel-coloured interiors, sash windows and an open fire.
