May/June 2025

Food is my favourite subject, so when the time comes around to put together our annual catering feature, it’s always a joy. The reason it’s so exciting to write is the sheer wealth of options available across the county, which never ceases to amaze me. When I think of wedding food, I must admit it can trigger thoughts of weddings from back in the day, where we sat down to a depressing meal of bland chicken or bust! But I soon remember, wedding catering isn’t like that anymore... mercifully! While the range of choice might make the process slightly more complicated, it is nevertheless, 100 per cent worth it. So, with the help of local caterers, we’ve put together a guide that ensures all your questions are answered.

Now, more so than say 20 or 30 years ago weddings are all about their couples. There are so many more ways to bring about the ultimate in personalisation and nowhere is this truer than in the world of wedding food. Catering companies are led by unbelievably talented chefs who can just as easily whip up your favourite dish as they can serve something from their own delicious menus. What’s more, dietaries aren’t a problem when creative, knowledgeable minds are at the helm. So, the key takeaway here is: don’t be afraid to ask. After all, the age of the foodie is upon us, so find a caterer that suits your tastes allowing you to work with your dream team to create something your guests will be talking about for years to come.

This issue, we’re also taking a peek into wedding flower trends. Stunning as ever, our experts’ work certainly made my jaw drop. Also, on the flora and fauna front, we’ve rounded up some of our favourite venues in the county blessed with glorious gardens for you to enjoy while you celebrate. You’ll be spoilt for backdrops to get your photographer’s creative juices flowing and garden games are a must!

So, I hope you love this issue as much as I loved putting it together, and as ever... enjoy and keeeep planning!

The Milner York

Known as the Grande-Dame of York, The Milner York’s Victorian architecture, beautifully landscaped gardens and sweeping views across to York Minster combine to make for a truly memorable day in this vibrant city. The adjacent train station and large car park makes The Milner York one of the most convenient venues for couples with travelling guests, too.

Blending rich history with contemporary style, the hotel offers a choice of elegant event spaces, including banqueting rooms licensed for civil ceremonies, an outdoor terrace for a Champagne reception with views of the gardens, and private dining rooms that seat from 30 to 250 guests.

The largest of the venue’s spaces is the Events Centre, which can accommodate up to 280 loved ones. This versatile space is equipped with state-of-the-art technology and can be transformed to any style of celebration and seating arrangement required.

The grand Oak Room is filled with natural light thanks to its double height sash windows, featuring original 19th-century oak panelling, a grand fireplace and a crystal chandelier, with views of both the hotel’s gardens and York Minster.

Intimate ceremonies and celebrations for up to 50 guests can be held in the elegant Wedgewood and Crown Rooms, featuring ornate ceilings, intricate coving and floor-to-ceiling windows that flood the space with natural light.

Wherever you choose to celebrate your nuptials here, guests will enjoy true Yorkshire hospitality with delicious dining options thoughtfully prepared by the talented team of chefs sourced from the finest regional ingredients. From traditional hog roasts and summer barbecues to seated fine dining, menus are crafted to complement all tastes.

Spend your first night as a married couple in one of the hotel’s luxurious suites with stunning views of the city’s landmarks, while guests can choose from a variety of comfortable accommodations in this 155-room hotel.
